A Canvas of My Heart

“A Canvas of My Heart”

A blank canvas I look upon

Staring back

A reflection of another’s creation

The brush of my eyes

Surveys what’s around me

What are these emotions?

I feel

Dormant they lay, words of the unknown

A world

Closed to an outside world

Many years have past

What I see, unable to speak

Withdrawn, fearful of saying the incorrect words

Expressions taking over

Painting an image I don’t see

Charming the one I love

A smile she adores

Embracing her with importance

That continues to grow

A seed for the future planted in this heart of mine

A language I know not of

This invisible wall I have built

Around me

Unable to break through, wanting to love her

More than the first day I met her

Writing with a pen,

A road map, of the ways I love her

Letting go of her

Freeing myself to feel the growth of words

Out of control

The things she remembers are not the same

Today as they were yesterday

Are our bodies in search of another?

I should hope not

For love is still there

They say action speaks louder than words

I don’t know

If I believe that phrase anymore

Actions being external,

Words rising up from the heart

A painter I am not

Applying them words I write

To the canvas of her heart,

My wife’s heart

Seeing if I can paint a secret garden

That will nourish her soul.
